About the Tip Calculator
A tip calculator saves doing percentages in your head at the end of a meal, a taxi ride or a delivery, and makes splitting a group bill fair. It is also useful for checking a service charge that has already been added.
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage and divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person’s share is the total divided by the number of people. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent for display. When a total cannot be split exactly, the calculator tells you how far the rounded shares are from the total so someone can cover the difference.
Tipping customs vary widely. In some countries 15–20% is expected in restaurants, while in others service is included or tips are small. Check whether the bill already includes a service charge, and decide whether to tip on the amount before or after tax. Amounts have no currency symbol, so the calculator works with any currency. The calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript, and this tool does not send what you enter to a Usevanta server.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. An 18% tip on 84.50 is 84.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = 15.21.
How do I split the bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. With a total of 99.71 and 3 people, each person pays about 33.24.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette varies. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. Enter whichever amount you prefer to tip on.
Why don’t the shares add up exactly to the total?
Each share is rounded to the nearest cent. When the total does not divide evenly, the shares can be a cent or two over or under, and the calculator shows the difference.
Can I calculate with no tip?
Yes. Enter 0 as the tip percentage to split the bill evenly without a tip.
