About the Time Zone Converter

Working with people in other countries means constantly asking what time it is for them. A time zone converter answers that for any date, so you can schedule meetings, catch international flights, join live events and avoid calling someone at 3 a.m.

This converter uses the IANA time zone database built into your browser through the Intl API, the same data your operating system uses for its clock. Instead of a fixed table of offsets, it looks up each zone’s rules for the exact date you enter, so past and future dates use the offset that applies on that day.

Daylight saving time (DST) moves clocks forward by an hour in spring and back in autumn in many countries, but not on the same dates. The US changes on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, while the EU changes on the last Sundays of March and October, so for a few weeks each year New York is 4 hours behind London instead of 5. Many places, including most of Asia and Africa, do not use DST at all.

When clocks spring forward, times in the skipped hour do not exist; the converter moves them forward and tells you. When clocks fall back, one hour happens twice; the converter uses the first occurrence and says so. Governments occasionally change time zone rules, and an out-of-date browser may not know the newest changes. The calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript, and this tool does not send what you enter to a Usevanta server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. It looks up the rules for both time zones on the date you enter, so DST is applied automatically. The offset shown next to each zone is the one in force on that date.

What is the difference between UTC and GMT?

For everyday use they show the same time. UTC is the precise time standard used by computers and aviation, while GMT is the time zone the UK uses in winter. London switches to BST (UTC+01:00) in summer, so London time is not always GMT.

Why are some time zones 30 or 45 minutes off?

Some regions chose offsets that are not whole hours, such as India (UTC+05:30), Nepal (UTC+05:45) and Newfoundland (UTC−03:30 in winter). The converter handles them like any other zone.

Why are time zones named like America/New_York instead of EST?

Abbreviations such as EST are ambiguous, and they change with daylight saving time. IANA names identify a region and its full history of rule changes. Where the browser knows a common abbreviation, it is shown alongside the offset.

Can I convert a Unix timestamp to another time zone?

Use the Unix Timestamp Converter to turn the timestamp into a date and time first, then convert that time here.
