About the Character Counter

Many fields have a character limit rather than a word limit: page titles, meta descriptions, SMS messages, social bios and form inputs. This counter shows the total length including spaces and punctuation, and the length with all whitespace removed.

The Letters count only includes the basic Latin letters A–Z, so accented letters such as "é" are counted in the total but not as letters. The total uses JavaScript string length, which means some emoji count as two characters, similar to how many websites measure length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the character count include spaces?

The first line includes every character, spaces and line breaks too. The "Without spaces" line removes all whitespace before counting.

Why does an emoji count as two characters?

Many emoji are stored as two UTF-16 code units, and the counter reports the JavaScript string length. Some platforms count them the same way, while others count them as one.

Are accented letters counted as letters?

They are included in the total character count, but the Letters line only counts A–Z and a–z.

Is my text sent to a server?

The calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript, and this tool does not send what you enter to a Usevanta server.
